A Quality Advisor from SSE Plc, has recently achieved a notable milestone by obtaining the CQI and IRCA certified Professional Certificate in Quality Management. What’s more, Ross Scobie is hopeful it’ll act as stepping stone towards CQI Chartership and a more senior position within his organisation.
We caught up with Ross to congratulate him on his accomplishment, find out about his role at SSE, his motivations for studying rove’s CQI and IRCA training courses, and what impact he thinks completing the program will have on his professional journey.
SSE is a leading generator of renewable electricity and one of the largest electricity network companies in the UK. In January 2020, Ross joined its Large Capital Projects (LCP) Quality team as a Quality Advisor.
In his role at SSE, there’s no typical day for Ross. He can be working on-site, in the office or from home. He provides quality support to live construction projects for SSE Transmission. The appeal of his role lies in the variety of projects he manages and the variety of locations he visits.
ROSS WANTED TO STRENGHTEN HIS UNDERSTANDING OF QUALITY THEORY
Ross enrolled on the CQI and IRCA quality course to aid with his personnel development. Although he had a great deal of technical knowledge, he wanted to strengthen his understanding in the principles of Quality Theory and Quality Management.
An integral part of SSE’s approach to employee development is the Personal Development Plan (PDP) which provides the employee with an opportunity to identify and agree, with their Line Manager, a way forward with regards to job related upskilling. It was agreed that, as part of Ross’s Quality development, a combination of internal and external training would be the best route to achieve his learning outcomes.
Through studying the Professional Certificate with rove, Ross would gain a holistic yet detailed understanding of Quality. This would be supplemented by internal training which would provide granularity and alignment around both SSE’s project portfolio quality management and SSE’s Corporate Quality ISO9001 certification requirements.
The Professional Certificate in Quality Management is designed for experienced practitioners who are in, or who aspire to be in, leadership or senior management positions. It comprises of six courses, covering; performance measurement, quality strategy, process excellence, supply chains, change and improvement and risk management.
Ross particularly enjoyed developing his knowledge around the ISO 9001 standard and gained new insights into risk management and stakeholder engagement.
ROSS’ MANAGER BELIEVES THE COURSES HAVE AIDED WITH HIS DEVELOPMENT
Jim Scott BSc, CQP, FCQI, Head of Quality at SSE plc, was instrumental in developing Ross’ PDP. He believes the courses have not only provided him with a broader Quality knowledge base but have helped him in his role. He said;
“Ross has demonstrated that not only has he enjoyed the challenges around rove’s learning materials but, most importantly, taken on board both learning streams which has provided him with a much broader Quality knowledge base.
“This has led to an increase in his confidence with his peers and also with the supply chain regarding quality related decision making and relationship building.
“I think the mix of both internal and external training is ideal in capturing the Quality principles and seeing alignment with SSE’s overarching Quality strategy and has been the key to Ross’s professional development.”
ROSS HOPES THE COURSES WILL ACT AS STEPPING STONE
Completing the CQI and IRCA quality course is a stepping stone for Ross towards CQI chartership and a more senior position within the organisation. The newfound knowledge and skills acquired through the course will equip him to navigate challenges and take on more leadership responsibilities.
